Sophomore finishes fifth as women's team takes 10th, men 12th.

AMES, Iowa – The University of Oklahoma women’s cross country team finished 10th and the men 12th Saturday at the 2008 Big 12 Cross Country Championships held on the campus of Iowa State University.
Sophomore Kelly Waters led the way for OU, finishing fifth to claim All Big-12 honors. Waters finished the 6,000-meter event with a time of 21 minutes and 14 seconds, 1:29 behind the defending Big 12 champion Sally Kipyego of Texas Tech.
The Sooner women finished with a total of 229 points, just four points behind host Iowa State. Following Waters in scoring was fellow sophomore Jessica Engel, who finished 18th (21:49). Junior Lauren Watson placed 43rd with a time of 22:26.
Sophomore Lindsay Pierson (24:09) and senior Amanda Mayfield (24:56) rounded out the scoring for the women, placing 81st and 82nd, respectively.
The men were led by sophomore Andres Gonzalez, who finished 65th, with a time of 26:43 in the men’s 8,000-meter competition.
Texas Tech took home the women’s title scoring 44 points with Kipyego claiming the individual title. Oklahoma State claimed top honors on the men’s side as German Fernandez finished with a time of 23:47.
Next up for the Sooners is the 2008 NCAA Midwest Regional, Nov. 15, in Stillwater, Okla.
