Oklahoma cross country men take third, and women ninth at the 2012 Big 12 Championships

NORMAN, Okla. - The sixth-ranked University of Oklahoma men's cross country team took third, and the women placed ninth at the 2012 Big 12 Cross Country Championships in Austin, Texas, Saturday afternoon.
Oklahoma State took first place in the men's division while Iowa State dominated the women's field for the second consecutive year.
The Sooners were led by Patrick Casey, who finished in fifth with a time of 4:01.4. Williams finished six spots ahead of where he placed in last year's competition

Casey along with fellow seniors Kevin Williams, Bill Kogel and Riley Masters received All-Big 12 honors.
Williams crossed the line with an 11th place 24:10.6 effort, to earn his third All-Big 12 honor. Kogel (24:14.1) and Masters (24:20.6) followed in 12th and 15th place, respectively.
Senior Andrew Weaver rounded the top-20 seven seconds behind Kogel with a 24:27.6 run to finish 19th at the annual conference meet.
Sophomore Ryan Poland (24:40.3), and freshman Brandon Doughty (24:44.1) finished within the top-30 with 24th- and 26th-place runs, respectively.
Also on hand for the Crimson and Cream squad were senior Kyle King, who took 36th with a 25:00.1 effort, and sophomore Daniel Nicolls who finished in 25:28.8 to take 47th.
Freshman Dan Schubert made his Big 12 debut after he crossed the line with a 25:44.2 effort.
Senior Jessica Engel led the Sooner women on the 6,000-meter course, with a time of 20:25.5 to finish fifth and earn her second consecutive All-Big 12 honor.
"I feel that I competed really well," explained Engel. "We have a tough conference and you always want to do well in this meet to see where you stand before regionals.
"My performance today has made me feel confident going toward regionals and I'm excited for the rest of the season."
Molly Ferguson was the second Sooner to cross the finish line with a time of 22:11 to finish 37th in the field. She was followed by Robin Ray who took 67th (23:14.2) and a trio of sophomores in Lantana McGraw (25:35.4), Myranda Joiner (26:25.3) and Erin Gaffney (29:23.1) who finished 85th, 86th and 87th, respectively.
Next up for the Sooners is the NCAA Midwest Regional on November 9, in Springfield, Mo.
