Five Women Named USTFCCCA All-Academic

Backel, Borman, Engel, Shump and Wells all earn academic honor.

NORMAN, Okla. — Five members of the Oklahoma women’s track and field program were named to the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic Track and Field Team the organization announced Wednesday. Amy Backel, Brittany Borman, Jessica Engel, Karen Shump and Sherine Wells were all named to the team after top performances on and off the track throughout the 2010 season.

It was the latest honor of many for the women’s program as Backel, Borman and Shump all earned All-America honors. Engel finished 12th in the 5,000-meter run at the NCAA Championships while Wells qualified for the NCAA West Regional in both the 100- and 200-meter dash.

To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, student-athletes must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met either the NCAA Division I Indoor automatic or provisional qualifying standard or participated in the NCAA Division I Outdoor Championships (including preliminary rounds) in their respective event.

The male Scholar Athletes of the Year in Division I, along with additional individuals given All]Academic status, will be released tomorrow, Thursday, July 29. Those institutions given All]Academic Team status will be named on Monday, August 2 (men) and Wednesday, March 3 (women).
