NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma track and field teams split this weekend to compete at a trio of high-caliber meets across the country. The majority of the team competes at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, and the Penn Relays Carnival in Philadelphia. Kevin Williams, Malcolm Wankel and Frezer Legesse run at the Payton Jordan Invitational in Stanford, Calif., on Sunday evening.
Action from the Drake Relays begins Thursday afternoon with Kelsey Brown in the women’s unseeded 800-meter run at 4 p.m. CT. Later that evening, Jessica Engel makes her outdoor debut in the women’s 5,000-meter run. Teammate Hilary Krein is also scheduled to run that event.
Friday action in Des Moines begins with field events at 11:30 a.m. CT. Tia Brooks and Bailey Wagner compete in the women’s shot put, while Brittany Borman (javelin), Wagner and Lauren Guerrieri (discus) get afternoon action underway at 2 p.m. CT. Brooks is the defending champion in the women’s shot put. The women’s seeded 800-meter run featuring Shakeeri Cole and Natalie Crain is at 2:34 p.m. CT.
Oklahoma closes out action at the event on Saturday with Rylee Rackley in the women’s hammer throw at 9 a.m. CT, and Brown and Molly Ferguson in the women’s 1,500-meter run at 5:01 p.m. CT.
The Sooners make their first appearance since 1997 at the United States’ oldest and largest track and field meet at the Penn Relays. OU’s last trip to the Carnival featured the men’s college 4x400-meter relay team. Oklahoma will have a live blog from the event online at SoonerSports.com.
OU’s schedule at the event begins Friday with the college men’s 4x100-meter preliminaries at 11:40 a.m. CT. Also scheduled for Friday are the college men’s 4x200- and 4x400-meter prelims.
Friday afternoon also features two Championship of America events in the men’s distance medley relay at 3 p.m. CT and the sprint medley relay at 5:50 p.m. CT. Marcus Anderson and Evan Pierson run the men’s 100-meter prelims at 2:20 p.m. Friday and Tre Lathan takes to the track in the 110-meter hurdles prelims at 2:40 p.m. CT Friday.
The men’s 4xmile relay Championship of America is at 12:25 p.m. CT Saturday and the men’s 4x800-meter relay team runs the Championship of America flight Saturday at 3:40 p.m. CT. Saturday’s action also includes the USA vs. The World event, featuring the top track and field stars from around the world and in the United States. USA vs. The World airs on NBC Saturday from noon-2 p.m. CT.
