Kogel, Borman Earn Big 12 Honors

Kogel earns first career honor, Borman garners fourth

April 11, 2012

NORMAN, Okla. – University of Oklahoma track and field athletes Bill Kogel (Sioux Falls, S.D.) and Brittany Borman (Festus, Mo.) were named the Big 12 Conference Athletes of the Week the league announced this afternoon. It’s the first career honor for Kogel and the fourth for Borman. Iowa State’s Meaghan Nelson was also named Female Athlete of the Week.

Kogel set a new Oklahoma program record in the men’s 10,000-meter run, running 28 minutes, 39.54 seconds to finish sixth overall at the Stanford Invitational. Kogel was the top collegiate finisher in the event. His time is the best in the nation and Big 12 Conference this year.

Borman shattered the record books April 7 with her win in the women’s javelin throw at the 33rd annual Sun Angel Classic. Borman’s mark of 194 feet, 11 inches is a new Oklahoma program record, besting Amy Backel’s mark of 182-5 set in 2010. The senior unleashed the mark on her first attempt of the evening, which was also her first competition throw in the event this season.

The American-leading throw set a Sun Angel Stadium facility and meet record and is tied for the 15th best throw in the world this year. The mark ranks Borman sixth on the United States all-time outdoor list and ranks her seventh on the collegiate list. Amongst American collegiate women, Borman is fifth. The throw also meets the Olympic B standard for the event. The mark is the best in the nation and Big 12 this year.

The Sooners are at home this weekend hosting the John Jacobs Invitational.
