NORMAN, Okla. – Senior Tia Brooks has been named the Big 12 Women’s Track and Field Athlete of the Week for competition Feb. 15-17, the Conference announced on Wednesday. It is the final weekly recognition of the 2013 Big 12 indoor season.
The announcement marks the third time that Brooks has taken home a weekly award throughout her career at OU, and second time this season she has been bestowed the honor. She was named the Big 12 Track and Field Athlete of the Week on Jan. 24, 2012 and again on Jan. 23, 2013.
In her final regular season indoor track and field meet, Brooks won her eighth consecutive shot put title after she totaled a 60-3.25 (18.32m) throw at the Sooner Invitational to break the standing meet record.
Her performance marked the second time this year that the senior thrower has surpassed a meet record after she broke the J.D. Martin Invitational and Mosier Indoor Track facility shot put record earlier this year with the nation’s best performance in the event.
Brooks, who holds the No.1 shot put performance in the country, is the only woman in the NCAA to throw over 60 feet in 2013. She has accomplished the feat not once, but twice now with her performance at the Sooner Invitational.
Brooks and the rest of the Sooner track and field team head to Ames, Iowa, this weekend for the 2013 Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships, Feb. 22-23.
