Casey Receives Big 12 Weekly Accolade

It is the first Big 12 of Casey's track career since he joined Oklahoma in 2012.

Jan. 29, 2013

NORMAN, Okla. – Oklahoma redshirt senior Patrick Casey has been named the Big 12 Male Athlete of the Week, for competition through Jan. 25-Jan. 27, after he ran the nation's best mile when he crossed the finish line in 3:56.28 to win the event at the 2013 Razorback Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark.

It is the first Big 12 honor of Casey’s track career since he joined Oklahoma’s track and field program in 2012.

The time is nearly two whole seconds faster than the second-best time to date of the 2013 indoor track and field season. Additionally, it is a personal-best time for Casey who shaved three seconds off of his previous low of 3:59.67 set in 2011, and a new Oklahoma Track and Field Record in the mile.

Casey is the first Sooner in program history to run the mile in under 3:58.00, after breaking George Alex's then-program leading time of 3:58.76, set in 2012.

Casey and the rest of the Sooners will split this weekend with select athletes traveling to New York, N.Y., for the highly anticipated New Balance Invitational on Feb. 1-2 for one of the nation’s premier indoor meets, also known as The Armory, while the distance corps will make way to Notre Dame, Ind., for the Meyo Invitational.
