Brooks named Big 12 Track and Field Athlete of the Week, following her national honor.
Jan. 23, 2013
NORMAN, Okla. -- After being named the USTFCCA Women’s National Athlete of the Week, redshirt senior Tia Brooks has been named the Big 12 Track and Field Athlete of the Week for competition Jan. 18-20, the conference office announced Wednesday.
It is the second weekly conference honor for Brooks, who was named the Big 12 Track and Field Athlete of the Week on Jan. 24, 2012.
The defending national champion in the indoor and outdoor shot put, Brooks has now won five straight shot put events after she dominated the field at the J.D. Martin Invitational with a 2013 collegiate-leading mark of 61-6¾ (18.76m). The throw won the event by nearly 12½ feet, giving her the third-best mark in the world for 2013.
Her performance marked the first collegiate throw farther than 60 feet this season, and leads the second-best throw in the country by more than four feet. Her non-winning throw of 57-9¾ still would have been enough to lead the country.
The mark was both a J.D. Martin Invitational and Mosier track record.
Brooks, and the rest of her Sooner team will head to the Razorback Invitational in Little Rock, Ark., on Friday, Jan. 25 and Saturday, Jan. 26.
