NORMAN, Okla. -- University of Oklahoma student-athletes have achieved a historic record in academics - an overall 3.01 grade-point average, OU President David L. Boren announced today.
 
The record is the highest ever recorded by OU Athletics in the 20 years it has tracked student-athletes' academic performance and is an especially impressive achievement given the increased entrance standards over the past several years that have created the academically highest-ranked student body at a public university in Oklahoma history.
 
"This record-breaking performance of our student-athletes is a tribute to their commitment as students to academic excellence and reflects the culture created by leaders in our Athletics Department which emphasizes the central importance of the academic mission of the university," Boren said.
 
Of the 21 sports at OU, team cumulative GPAs of 3.0 or higher were achieved by a record 12 teams: men's golf, men's tennis, men's track, men's cross country, women's basketball, women's golf, women's gymnastics, rowing, soccer, women's tennis, women's track and volleyball.
 
All 21 sports at OU are well above the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Academic Progress Rate threshold of 925.
 
Perfect Academic Progress Rate scores have been achieved by men's gymnastics, men's and women's cross country, rowing, softball, women's tennis, women's track and field, and volleyball, while the football program has led the Big 12 in the Academic Progress Rate each of the past two years, and in the most recent study achieved a record rate of 962.
