PSYCHOLOGICAL COUNSELING & SPORT PSYCHOLOGY SERVICES
The Prentice Gautt Academic Center is staffed with a licensed Counseling Psychologist to provide a wide array of counseling and performance enhancing services. Student-athletes may visit the staff psychologist to confidentially discuss anything impacting their academic, athletic, or personal lives.
ASSESSMENT
The academic assessment process begins with an entry-level assessment of all incoming student-athletes. This assessment is designed to help student-athletes know their strengths and weaknesses in content areas such as reading, writing, and mathematics. With this information, we can determine if student-athletes have the skills necessary to succeed in standard entry-level courses. Some results from this initial assessment may require additional testing, enrollment in developmental courses and academic services, or programs recommended based on individual needs. The ultimate purpose of our assessment is to ensure that student-athletes have the appropriate academic support services to achieve academic success.
SUPERVISED STUDY
Supervised study is a monitored study program designed to provide student-athletes with organized study and tutoring time in a flexible environment conducive to successful learning. Supervised study is required for all first-semester freshmen, transfer student-athletes, student-athletes with a cumulative GPA below 2.50, and any student-athlete who the coaching staff and the Student Life academic staff believe would benefit from the experience.
Supervised study is flexible for all student-athletes. Supervised study hours are 8 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. from Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Fridays. All freshman and transfer student-athletes are required to put in 10 hours a week in their first semester at the University. Any study area or learning center is available for use during these times. The hours required by the student's adviser will be totaled at the end of each week.

SUPPLEMENTAL INSTRUCTION (SI)
To ensure our student-athletes reach their full academic
potential, we offer a comprehensive program of Supplemental
Instruction. The SI program provides additional support
to our student-athletes in both lower division and
upper division classes in order to ensure successful
completion of classes with a grade that reflects their
true academic ability. SI relies on an established
network of students, tutors, facilitators, mentors,
and professors working together to ensure the success
of the student-athlete.
Through the use of this network
of individuals, Academic Services ensures that student-athletes
receive instruction from tutors with content knowledge
specifically chosen to facilitate athletes in each
individual course. In addition to this, our tutors
receive instruction from professional educators in
study strategies and test taking skills. This expertise
is transferred to our student-athletes in one to one
sessions for those who require individual attention,
or small group sessions in which the learning experience
can be enhanced through dialogue with peers.
ACADEMIC ASSISTANCE/TUTORING
Tutors are available to assist student-athletes in all subject areas. Individual or small group sessions can be arranged with content experts either allocated by Academic Services or personally requested by the student-athlete. Academic Services also provides revision groups, study sessions and weekly instruction on an individual or group basis in order to ensure student-athlete success.
THE PRENTICE GAUTT MENTOR PROGRAM: ACADEMIC MENTORING
Mentors are assigned by academic counselors to designated student-athletes to assist them with study skills, problem solving techniques, and time management. The primary goal of the mentoring program is to create an environment conducive to student-athlete success in the university academic setting. Athletic Student Life promotes this environment of academic success through several methods. Arriving at a new college campus can be very intimidating for both freshmen and transfer students. Our program provides a mentor to help familiarize the student-athlete with the academic and social culture at OU, thus helping to ease the transition to the University setting.
