Sooners' Comeback Bid Comes Up Short
NORMAN – The OU women’s tennis team took No. 13 Texas Tech to the wire Friday, but fell to the Red Raiders, 4-3, at the Headington Family Tennis Center.
The Sooners gave up the doubles point after a battle, but fought back in singles to tie the match at 3-all after trailing 3-0. The contest came down to a third-set tiebreaker on court five, with Texas Tech prevailing.
With the loss, OU moves to 12-10 overall and 2-4 in Big 12 matches, while Texas Tech improves to 15-5, 4-2 Big 12.
“I’m super proud of them,” said head coach Audra Cohen on her team. “To give themselves opportunities to win on every court is always out goal when we come out here, and for them to come out here and lay their heart on the court and give themselves an opportunity to win the match and have it come down to a 7-6 in the third, that’s just a testament to how much talent these girls really have.”
In doubles, the teams split the first two courts to leave the point to be decided on on court one.
Simran Sethi and Camila Romero took down TTU’s Katelyn Jackson and Alex Valenstein, 6-4, from the No. 3 line. On court two, OU’s Miyazaki and Stripp went the distance with No. 89 Felicity Maltby and Gabriela Talaba, but fell after a tiebreaker, 7-6 (4).
Sooners Jasmine Asghar and Christie Brigante took No. 15 Sabrina Federici and Sarah Dvorak to a tiebreaker at the No. 1 line, tying every point in the breaker before the Red Raiders pulled away.
Texas Tech took a quick, 3-0 lead in singles.
On court four, OU’s Romero fell to No. 96 Sabrina Federici, 6-3, 6-0. Stripp was defeated by Red Raider Katelyn Jackson in a three-setter, 1-6, 6-3, 6-1.
Senior Brigante put the Sooners on the board with a 7-5, 7-6 (7), win over Valenstein from the No. 3 line.
No. 41 Miyazaki brought OU within one of Texas Tech when she defeated No. 17 Talaba of Texas Tech, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1. In
Asghar evened out the match with a thrilling, 6-7 (4), 6-2, 7-5, victory over Texas Tech’s No. 46 Maltby. The win was Asghar’s first over a ranked opponent this season.
That left the match to be decided on court five, where the OU's Sethi was defeated by No. 112 Dvorak in a wild three-setter, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (4). Sethi won the first frame handily before Dvorak turned the tables and won the second to force a deciding set. Dvorak took a 3-0 lead in the third set before Sethi rallied to tie it at 6-6, saving four match points to send the court to a tiebreaker. Sethi struck first in the breaker, but Dvorak ultimately prevailed to clinch the match for Texas Tech.
The Sooners return to action on Sunday, when they host TCU at 2 p.m. in the final home contest of the season. The team will honor seniors Brigante, Sethi, Miyazaki, Stripp and Brooke Withrow prior to the match, and free food will be provided to the first 100 fans in attendance.
