ORLANDO The Oklahoma women’s tennis team took down No. 40 NC State in a thriller Friday, defeating the Wolfpack, 4-3, at the USTA National Campus.

After dropping the doubles point, the Sooners fought back in singles and held strong through second-set tiebreakers and third sets to upset NC State.

The victory was OU’s first over a ranked opponent this season, and moves the Sooners to 6-5 overall. NC State falls to 7-8, 1-2 ACC.

"This was a total team effort today. We stayed very resilient and competed with a lot of heart," said head coach Audra Cohen. "I'm proud of how well the team fought after dropping the doubles point. In singles, were more willing to zone in our focus in the high pressure moments, and that was the big difference-maker in the end."

The Sooners gave up the doubles point to open the match. Jasmine Asghar and Christie Brigante were defeated by No. 17 Anna Rogers and Claudia Wiktorin, 6-2, in the top spot. Lily Miyazaki and Malene Stripp fell to Bianca Moldovan and Tayla Stenta, 6-4, from the No. 3 line.

Camila Romero and Simran Sethi fell to Adriana Reami and Amanda Rebol, 6-4, on court two after the Wolfpack had clinched the point.

The Sooners surged back in singles play to win in a thriller. NC State took a 2-0 lead when Miller was defeated by Taylor Bridges, 6-1, 6-2, on court five, but Stripp put OU on the board with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Stenta from the No. 6 line.

No. 31 Miyazaki kept the momentum going when she took down No. 51 Rogers after a battle, coming out on top of a second set tiebreaker to win 7-5, 7-6 (4), on court one and tied the match at 2-2.

Romero was defeated by Moldova on court five, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. The freshman bounced back after dropping her first set to play a dominant second frame and force a third set, but Moldova prevailed and the Wolfpack regained the lead, 3-2.

Brigante evened out the match at 3-all with a 4-6, 7-6 (1), 6-1, win over Wiktorin from the No. 3 line. Brigante dropped the first set before fighting off four match points to send the second frame to a tiebreaker and win it, 7-6 (1) keeping her court alive. The senior did not let up, never trailing in the third set to close out the match and keep the Sooners in the contest.

The match came down to court two, where Asghar clinched for OU when she defeated Reami, 7-6 (2), 5-7, 6-4. In the third frame, the sophomore trailed 2-1 early, but took control to win the at the No. 2 line and seal the match for the Sooners.

"Jasmine stepped up and played a mentally tough match today," said Cohen. "I'm proud of her growth and excited to see her continue to gain confidence in big moments."
