NORMAN Oklahoma women’s tennis swept North Texas, 7-0, Wednesday at the Headington Family Tennis Center.

The Sooners opened the match with the doubles point and picked up straight-sets wins on every court in singles action for the clean sweep.

With the win, OU improves to 3-4 on the season. North Texas also moves to 3-4 and 1-0 in Conference USA action.

“It’s a big win. It’s always nice to win obviously the whole dual match, but I liked the way we got to work on every court," said head coach Audra Cohen. "We were able to beat (North Texas) 7-0, and they’re not a bad team at all. For us to do it pretty handily is a big accomplishment because it’s going to take being that focused and able to execute our best tennis on every single court in every single position into the Big 12 season.”

In doubles play, OU grabbed wins on courts one and three to clinch the point.

Camila Romero and Simran Sethi didn’t give up a game en route to a 6-0 victory over Minying Liang and Haruka Sasaki at No. 3 before Christie Brigante and Jasmine Asghar bested Tamuna Kutubidze and Alexandra Heczey, 6-2, on court two to seal the point for the Sooners.

When play was halted, Malene Stripp and Skyler Miller led Maria Kononova and Nidi Surapaneni, 4-3.

Sethi struck first for the Sooners in singles action, with a dominant 6-1, 6-0 win over Sille Tranberg on court four. The victory was the senior’s first on the season.

No.18 Miyazaki notched her first win over a ranked opponent with a 6-1, 6-3, victory over No. 48 Kononova from the No. 1 line.

Asghar defeated Kutubidze, 6-3, 6-2, on court two, handing Kutubidze her first loss of the season. In the first frame, Asghar took a 3-0 lead before Kutubidze tied the set at 3-all. Asghar won the next three games straight to capture the set.

Stripp handled Sasaki on court six, winning 6-3, 6-2. The senior never trailed in her match.

Brigante beat Liang, 7-6 (5), 6-2, on court three. Brigante took a 4-1 lead in the first set before Ling forced a tiebreaker, but the Sooner prevailed and dominated set two for the win.

Romero closed out the day for the Sooners with a 6-3, 7-6 (4) win over Surapaneni from the No. 5 line. After trailing 3-0, Romero won six straight games to grab the frame. In the second set, the freshman was down 5-2 before surging back to force a tiebreaker, and came out on top to give OU its final singles victory of the day.

The Sooners are back in action Saturday to host the University of the Pacific at 11 a.m. Free pizza will be provided for fans in attendance, and OU will host a free clinic for kids ages 5-13 immediately following the match. No prior registration is required. Participants should bring their own rackets, but a limited number will be available for those who do not have one.
