NORMAN Oklahoma women’s tennis dropped a tight match to Arkansas on Friday night, falling to the Razorbacks, 4-3, in the Sooners’ home opener.

“We knew Arkansas was going to come down to a 4-3 match,” said head coach Audra Cohen. “We came up short today, but the energy overall and how hard they fought for every point is really something to be proud of.”

With the match tied at 3-3, OU's Christie Brigante was defeated by Arkanasas' Giulia Pairone 3-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-0, allowing the Razorbacks to escape with the victory. With the loss, the Sooners move to 1-4 on the season, while Arkansas improves to 2-2.

In doubles action, Skyler Miller and Malene Stripp picked up a win for the Sooners on court three, defeating Peyton Jennings and Natsuho Arakawa, 6-3.

At No. 2, Christie Brigante and Simran Kaur Sethi fell to Pairone and Mia Jurasic, 6-4, leaving court one to decide the doubles point.

Lily Miyazaki and Jasmine Asghar battled, but were defeated by Arkansas' Tatum Rice and Ana Operanovic, 7-5, and the Razorbacks took the doubles point.

The Sooners surged back in singles play, with the newcomers Miller, Asghar and Romero all notching wins.

Freshman Miller picked up OU’s first singles victory of the day to tie the match at 1-1, defeating Jennings, 6-1, 7-5, on court six. Miller trailed 5-3 in the second frame before winning the next four games straight to win in straight sets.

Romero got her first dual-match singles win at OU with a 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, victory over the Razorbacks' Arakawa. The freshman won three straight games to take the second frame before winning a back and forth third set.

Asghar also recorded her first career singles win as a Sooner. The newcomer, who joined the roster in January, defeated Arkansas' Jurasic on court two, 6-1, 6-7 (1), 6-2. Asghar put away the first frame with ease, but Jurasic surged back in the second and traded games with Asghar to force a tiebreaker.

“It was a bit nerve-wracking, but I had my teammates behind me and they really supported me,” said Asghar of her three-set win. “I was able to get it done even though the second set was a tough one. They got me through it."

Miyazaki fell to Operanovic, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 1 singles. Stripp was handed her first loss of the spring season in singles when she was defeated by Rice, 7-5, 1-6, 6-1, on court five.

The Sooners are home next weekend to face Old Dominion Saturday at noon. The contest will be a pink match for breast cancer awareness. Fans are encouraged to wear pink, and free t-shirts will be available to the first 150 fans in attendance.
