Sooners Tie One GPA Record, Extend Another

NORMAN — University of Oklahoma student-athletes have been a collective model of success in the classroom the last many years, and that trend continued in a big way last fall.

OU student-athletes posted a 3.09 cumulative GPA for the fall 2017 semester, tying the 3.09 GPA from the spring 2017 semester as the best in recorded school history. The achievement marked a record 12th consecutive semester of posting at least a 3.0 figure.

"Their dedication to learning, making good grades and to completing their degree program is to be commended, and is positioning them for a positive and fulfilling life after athletics. That's what we want to see more than anything else."

OU's streak of student-athletes posting a GPA of at least 3.0 started in spring 2012. Averages have ranged from 3.01 to 3.09. The 3.09 cumulative fall GPA reflects the overall academic performance of those student-athletes from their first semester of collegiate enrollment through the completion of the fall 2017 term.

Seventy-three student-athletes (15 percent) earned a 4.0 fall semester GPA, while 325 (65 percent) earned a 3.0-or-higher term GPA.

Thirteen of OU's 19 athletics teams, including every women's team, held a 3.0 cumulative GPA following the fall semester. They are women's basketball (3.39), men's cross country (3.21), women's cross country (3.48), men's golf (3.13), women's golf (3.22), men's gymnastics (program-record 3.29), women's gymnastics (program-record 3.52), women's rowing (3.38), women's soccer (program-record 3.44), softball (3.19), women's tennis (3.61), women's track and field (3.27) and women's volleyball (3.42).

Two other teams — baseball and men's basketball — held a 2.99 cumulative GPA following the fall semester.
