We already knew we had the best fans in the country, but Sooner Nation, you blew us away again!
Thank you to the hundreds of fans who submitted nominations for the #1OklahomaFan! We had a blast reading through all of your great stories, and narrowing it down to three finalists was certainly no easy task.
But without further adieu, the finalists for the #1OklahomaFan are:
There are multiple reasons as to why I would say I am the #1OklahomaFan.
I started going to OU football games when I was in kindergarten and just finished my 25th season in 2017. In those 25 seasons, I have showed up late and left early but never missed a home game. I have also traveled far and wide to away games at Tennessee, Ohio State and Notre Dame to name a few. Most of my vacations are scheduled around away games. I've been to huge bowl victories and crushing defeats.
I could list football memories and favorite games but the number one reason I am the #1OklahomaFan would be because of 2016. In 2016, I was diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer. When I got my treatment plan, my biggest concern was how it would interfere with football games. Having perfect attendance was important for me to maintain, although I knew at that time it shouldn't have been a top priority. With my doctor's blessing, I went to every home game. Even though throughout that season I didn't make it through a full game, let alone a full half, I did not miss a game. That stadium, the fans, and my beloved team made a very difficult time more enjoyable. Those Saturdays gave me energy to continue on through chemo.
I am happy to say that I have been cancer free for a year and look forward to many more Saturdays at the place I consider my home away from home with my 85,000+ extended family.
Ever heard of the OU crying kid?
A quick Google search may jog your memory. It was 2006, I was 10 years old and I was caught crying on national TV after a crushing defeat to UT. I spent the rest of my childhood with that picture following me around. My peers always had something to say about it, it was an easy target for ridicule.
To this day, I have always had pride in my Sooners even when my fanmanship made it hard for me to even throw on an OU T-shirt without that picture coming back to haunt me. I've always replied to the teasing with a confident "BOOMER".
Every big loss the Sooners run into, I find my picture being scattered throughout social media. Longhorns love it, quick ammo for them. Even with that I still hold my head high with that Sooner pride.
If I could do it all over again I would. That picture represents the type of die-hard fans we have even at a young age. There is no fanbase like ours in the country. That is why I believe I am OU's #1 fan! I only hope you can agree with me. #Boomer
Ever since going to my first OU football game vs. Texas Tech in 1994 with my dad and brother, I've been hooked on the Sooners!
I won a contest in high school to see who could go the longest wearing a different OU shirt on consecutive days (I got 5 full school weeks). In sports, I always painted my cleats silver so I could be like Joe Washington. Every year, I'm known as the crazy OU fan¯ in our neighborhood that puts an OU in Christmas lights on our roof and spray paints an OU design in our yard during football season.
I also have numerous superstitions to try and bring good fortune to the Sooners: I never miss watching an OU game and I always have an OU helmet pointed toward Norman for good luck. I made a deal with my friends in 2014 to grow my hair out for good luck until OU won a national championship. I didn't cut it for 3 and a half years, but I cut it this spring to reset and give Lincoln Riley a clean slate. In 2013, in an effort to break the curse against Notre Dame, I made a good luck coup stick (something Native American warriors would carry to symbolize their victories) before our game in South Bend. It has 7 feathers, one for each national championship, and I'd love to add more! The coup stick sits next to the helmet during OU games. I always wear my Samaje Perine jersey during OU games.
Lastly, I'm passing my fandom along to my daughter, who we named Sterling after one of our favorite Sooners ever, Sterling Shepard. One of the first things we taught her was to pump her fist and say "Yeah!"¯ when we said "Boomer Sooner!" My friends and family would all say I should be considered the #1OklahomaFan
The finalists will now work with Top of the World to create their own unique designs for the official 2018 There's Only One shirt and hat. The designs will be unveiled next week, and all Sooner fans will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite.
The OU Athletics Department is partnering with IMG College Licensing and Top of the World to present this year's #1OklahomaFan contest. Please continue to check back at 1OklahomaFan.com for the latest updates.
