Pellington Scores 23 as OU Tops Iowa State

AMES, Iowa — Shaina Pellington scored 23 points and Maddie Manning eclipsed the 1,000-point mark as OU defeated Iowa State, 74-69, on Sunday for its first Big 12 win of the year.
Pellington's 23 points tied her season high and came on 9-of-14 shooting from the field and 5-of-6 shooting at the foul line. The freshman scored 17 points in the second half as the Sooners (6-7, 1-1 Big 12) held off a late surge from Iowa State (7-6, 1-1 Big 12). The victory gave the Sooners their third straight win on road against Iowa State for the first time in the Big 12 era.
The Sooners improved to 5-1 this season when leading at halftime as OU took a 42-34 lead into the locker room. Gabbi Ortiz scored 11 of her 13 points in the first half to help the Sooners build an eight-point halftime lead. The senior knocked down two 3-pointers to move into a tie for fourth place on OU's career made 3-pointers list. Ortiz also led the Sooners with three steals and two blocks.
Maddie Manning and LaNesia Williams each added in 12 points. Manning became the 33rd player in OU history to reach the 1,000-point mark by scoring five points in the first quarter. A native of Ankeny, Iowa, and playing in Hilton Coliseum for the final time, Manning knocked down four straight free throws in the final minute to seal the win. The graduate student guard finished 9-of-10 at the charity stripe in the win.
Williams' 12 points were the most for the senior against a Big 12 opponent in her career. The senior was 5-of-9 from the field and added in two rebounds in 28 minutes off the bench.
The Sooners outshot Iowa State, .500-.400, from the field and won the rebounding battle, 32-31. The Cyclones finished 7-of-28 (.250) from beyond the arc, but the Sooners held Iowa State without a 3-pointer during the second and third quarters.
Bridget Carleton led Iowa State with 21 points, nine rebounds and seven steals. Madison Wise added 15 points for the Cyclones, while Adriana Camber scored 12.
