NORMAN – For the second week in a row, the Oklahoma freshman duo of guard Trae Young and forward Brady Manek swept the Big 12’s weekly awards (Dec. 18-24), the conference announced Wednesday. Young earned Big 12 Player of the Week while Manek was honored as Big 12 Newcomer of the Week, marking the first time in Big 12 history that one pair of players from the same school earned both honors in consecutive weeks.
A 6-2 freshman guard from Norman, Young helped lead the Sooners to a 2-0 week by averaging 28.5 points, 17.0 assists and 3.0 rebounds in 28.0 minutes while shooting 18-of-32 (.563) from the field and 11-of-19 (.579) from 3-point range. His week was highlighted by tying the NCAA record for most assists in a game with 22 dimes against Northwestern State on Tuesday. Young is the fourth player in recorded college basketball history to register 22 assists and the first since Sherman Douglas of Syracuse in 1989.
Since the NCAA began recording assists in 1983, Young is the only freshman to dish out 20 or more assists in a game. Young is also the first NCAA player to record over 20 points and 20 assists in at least 20 years.
Young followed up his historic performance by producing 31 points and 12 assists against Northwestern on Friday, shooting 9-of-16 from the field and 8-of-13 from 3-point range. Young’s performance was the second time this season he has recorded at least 30 points and 10 assists in a game. Per ESPN Stats and Info, Young joins Chris Thomas (2001-02 Notre Dame) as the only players from a major conference in the last 20 seasons to have a pair of 30-point, 10-assist games in the same season.
Young’s outings last week extended his streak of scoring at least 20 points to 10 straight games. He is the first Sooner with such a streak since Stacey King had 11 straight games of 20-plus points in 1988-89.
Young, who leads the nation in both scoring (28.7 points per game) and assists (10.4 per game), has earned Big 12 Player of the Week honors four times in the first seven weeks of the season (has also earned two Big 12 Newcomer of the Week recognitions). Only two Big 12 players have ever earned the honor more in one season. Oklahoma's Blake Griffin was named the conference's Player of the Week six times in 2008-09 and Texas Tech's Andre Emmett was awarded the honor five times in 2003-04.
A 6-9 forward from Harrah, Okla., Manek earned the second Big 12 honor of his career by averaging 16.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.5 steals in 19.5 minutes while shooting 12-of-16 from the field (.750) and 6-of-9 (.667) from 3-point range.
On Tuesday against Northwestern State, Manek scored a career-high 22 points, finishing 9-of-11 (.818) from the field and 4-6 (.667) from behind the arc. The freshman continued to shoot well against Northwestern on Friday, producing 11 points and eight boards in 19 minutes while going 3-of-5 from the field and 2-of-3 from 3-point range.
