OU Sweeps Arkansas in Four-Set Exhibition
NORMAN — In its only exhibition contest before the 2018 season starts, the Oklahoma volleyball team swept Arkansas 4-0 on Saturday. The two teams opted to play an extra set in the preseason scrimmage at McCasland Field House.
The Sooners clinched the sweep 25-23, 25-21, 25-22, 25-19 in front of a crowd of 658.
“All things considered – putting the jerseys on, the nerves, the first match – it was exciting to see us settle in and get into some of the fundamental principles that are going to allow us to have a lot of success this year,” OU head coach Lindsey Gray-Walton said. “Those were things that were bright spots for us. We can always get better, but those were baseline things that we really wanted to focus on.”
Senior outside hitter Alyssa Enneking led all players with 16 kills in the contest, finishing the exhibition with a .484 hitting percentage, and sophomore setter Kylee McLaughlin paced the match with 29 assists.
Sophomore outside hitter Sarah Maras impressed with five service aces against the Razorbacks and two solo blocks. Junior middle blocker Brianna Kadiku totaled six block assists for the Crimson and Cream, the most block assists among both teams.
“The energy level was good,” Gray-Walton continued. “We see a lot of people who can do a lot of different things for us. Overall, we have to be really pleased with this moment and moving on for next week.”
The Sooners open their 2018 campaign Aug. 24-25 in Dekalb, Ill., at the Northern Illinois Invitational, the first of three road tournaments for OU. Oklahoma then returns to McCasland Sept. 14-15 to host Northwestern State and Texas A&M in the OU Nike Invitational. Season and single-match tickets are on sale now.
