Volleyball Announces Roster, Staff Additions
NORMAN — Head Oklahoma volleyball coach Lindsey Gray-Walton announced Monday the addition of transfer Haley Sanchez for the upcoming 2018 season. The defensive specialist will have two years of eligibility remaining when she joins the Sooners this fall.
Sanchez comes to Oklahoma after spending the first two seasons of her career at Bakersfield College. Most recently, Sanchez led the Renegades to a share of the WSC-South Conference Championship.
A native of Bakersfield, Calif., Sanchez averaged 4.26 digs, 1.38 assists and 0.53 service aces per set in 2017 to be honored as Western State Conference Libero of the Year. As a freshman, she registered 1.82 digs and 0.32 service aces per set.
Additionally, Drake Stenberg has been added to Gray-Walton’s staff as Director of Volleyball Operations.
Stenberg joins the program after a two-year stint as Assistant Director of Event Management and Operations for OU Athletics, overseeing facility use and directing gameday operations for softball, track and field, men’s and women’s tennis, volleyball and wrestling.
A two-time graduate of Northern Illinois University, Stenberg received a bachelor’s degree in exercise science in 2013 and a master’s degree in sports management in 2015. The Sycamore, Ill., native served as a graduate assistant for NIU’s facilities and event operations for two years.
The Sooners enter the 2018 season off a 4-0 sweep of Arkansas in an exhibition match on Aug. 18. Gray-Walton’s inaugural season at the helm officially begins Friday-Saturday at the NIU Invitational in Dekalb, Ill., when the Sooners take on Xavier, DePaul and Northern Illinois.
The NIU Invitational is the first of three consecutive road tournaments for OU. The Sooners return to McCasland Field House Sept. 14-15 to host Texas A&M and Northwestern State in the OU Nike Invitational. Season and single-match tickets are on sale now.
