The University of Oklahoma volleyball team jumps back into Big 12 play with a visit to Baylor on Saturday, September 30. The Sooners and the Bears get started at 2 p.m. from the Ferrell Center.

Oklahoma is 3-12 overall and 0-2 in the Big 12 after dropping its first two conference matches. Junior outside hitter Alyssa Enneking leads the Sooner attack with 4.07 kills per set on a .245 attack rate to go with 2.84 digs per set. Junior outside hitter Madison Drescher, who is averaging 4.33 kills per set over the last three matches, is second with 2.80 kills per set. Freshman Sarah Maras has moved from outside hitter to middle blocker, where she is averaging a team-high 0.96 blocks per set to go with 1.07 kills. Freshman libero Kira Morikawa has started 13 of 15 matches and leads the Sooner back row with 3.15 digs per set. The Sooners have lost seven in a row for the first time since 2005 and are still seeking their first true road win of the season.

Baylor is 12-4 overall and 2-1 in the Big 12 after having its seven-match win streak snapped at Texas on Wednesday night. Reigning Big 12 Player of the Week Katie Staiger averages a team-leading 4.45 kills to go with 2.79 digs per set. Shelly Fanning is second on the team with 2.97 kills per set, while hitting .411. Setter Hannah Lockin guides the Bears offense with 10.89 assists and adds 2.06 digs per set. As a team, Baylor is hitting .276 and holding opponents to a .156 attack rate. The Bears are 7-1 at home this season, including a four-set win over Texas Tech (Sept. 20) in its conference opener.

Baylor knocked off Oklahoma in five in the Sooners’ home finale on Nov. 16, 2016. OU claimed a two sets to one lead by taking the second and third. The Sooners led by as many as eight at 14-6 in the fourth before the Bears fought back in a marathon set, 32-20, to force a fifth and deciding set, which was won by BU, 15-11. Staiger and Enneking each paced their side with 20 kills, while Morgan Reed and Audrey Alford matched each other with 51 assists apiece.

The Sooners own the all-time series against the Bears, 39-17. Oklahoma has won 13 of the last 16 matches dating back to 2008, winning eight straight against Baylor from 2012 until last season. The Bears won the first two matches of the series in 1976 and 1977, but the Sooners then rattled off the series’ longest winning streak of eight matches from 1979-89, which would later be equaled by OU from 2012-15.

She has averaged 10.00 assists and 1.81 digs per set. Alford recorded a double-double in each match against the Bears in 2016. Emma Kelly reached double figures in digs twice against BU in 2016, while Alyssa Enneking notched double-digit kills twice last season.

Redshirt-junior Rachel Manriquez has been called on to start the other two matches to push her career total to 44 starts at libero. In her career, Manriquez has averaged 3.38 digs per set and starter 13 matches in 2015 and all 29 matches in 2016.

Five Sooners combined for 28 double-doubles in 2016 and exactly half of those double-doubles return for 2017. Audrey Alford and Alyssa Enneking each collected seven double-doubles a year ago. Alford picked up her first of 2017 with a 23-assist, 11-dig effort in the first match of the season. Enneking leads the team with six so far in 2017. Alford and Morgan Miller, who has added a triple-double, have each recorded three double-doubles through 15 matches.
