Two Sooners Punch Tickets on Day Two
NORMAN - The Oklahoma Sooners saw a group of track and field athletes advance to the next rounds of championship competition on day two at the NCAA West Preliminary Round in Sacramento, Calif.
Two Sooners secured spots at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Austin, Texas, on June 5-8, while five more Oklahoma athletes advanced to Saturday's quarterfinal races.
Sophomore Joseph Sheffield was the first Sooner to clinch a trip to Austin for the championship rounds, running a 10.36 in the quarterfinals of the men's 100-meter dash. Sheffield grabbed an automatic qualification by taking third place in his heat. He will make his second trip to the NCAA Outdoor Championships after making the trip in 2018 as a member of OU's 4x100-meter relay team.
In her fourth consecutive NCAA Preliminary Round appearance, senior Meagan Gray punched her own ticket to the outdoor championship, clearing 14-2 (4.32m) for 11th place in the women's pole vault. It will be Gray's first trip to the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Back on the track, five out of five Sooners advanced to the quarterfinals of their respective events. The runners will need to finish in the top three of their heats or with the next three fastest times to advance to Nationals.
Sophomore Camri Austin set a personal record with a 12.92w in the women's 100-meter hurdles. The Big 12 runner-up owned the third-best time in the first round, and she will look to advance through quarterfinals at 9:05 p.m. CT on Saturday.
OU saw two women and two men advance through the first rounds of the 200-meter dashes.
Sophomores Dai'Lyn Merriweather and Ja'Leesa Giles both claimed personal-best times on their way to top-24 finishes. Merriweather finished in 23.27, while Giles clocked in at 23.53. They'll race for spots in Austin at 9:35 p.m. CT Saturday night.
Less than two hours after advancing through the 100-meter dash quarterfinals, Sheffield returned to the track in the first round of the 200-meter dash. Both Sheffield (20.69) and junior Xavier Brown (20.85) clocked personal bests to advance to tomorrow's 9:50 p.m. CT quarterfinals.
In the women's discus, redshirt junior Meia Gordon took 27th with a throw of 165-2 (50.35m), while sophomore Lauren Jones tossed it 166-3 (50.67m) to finish 25th. Gordon will have another chance to advance to Austin in tomorrow's shot put, but Jones' season came to a close after her second consecutive NCAA West Prelims appearance.
Five other Sooners saw their 2019 outdoor campaigns come to a conclusion.
Redshirt senior Sarah Scott closed out her accomplished Sooner career with a season-best 10:07.03 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, taking 16th to miss the cut by just four spots. The back-to-back Big 12 Champion ends her career with her fourth consecutive trip to the NCAA West Prelims and as Oklahoma's 3K steeplechase school record holder.
After a personal record in Friday's first round, sophomore Ackeen Colley took 21st place in the men's 800-meter run quarterfinals with a time of 1:50.79.
In her first NCAA Prelims appearance, senior Sydney King cleared 13-4.25 (4.07m) to take 24th in the women's pole vault, while fellow senior and school record holder Kenzie Shell took 36th with a mark of 12-10.25 (3.92m) in her third preliminary trip.
Sophomore Josh Haus finished in 38th place with a throw of 193-8 (59.05m) in the men's javelin.
The road to the NCAA Outdoor Championships continues Saturday with the remaining field events and a full slate of quarterfinal and semifinal races on the track, including the 4x100 and 4x400 relays.
