NORMAN - Oklahoma's men's and women's track and field teams opened competition at the NCAA West Preliminary Round on Thursday in Sacramento, Calif.

13 Sooners competed on the first day of the preliminaries, vying to earn spots at the NCAA Track & Field Outdoor Championships in Austin, Texas, on June 5-8. The top 12 marks in field events advance to NCAAs, while the top 12 in quarterfinal or semifinal races on the track earn a spot in Austin.

Day one in Sacramento was highlighted by sophomore Ackeen Colley's PR 1:48.62 in the men's 800-meter run. The time lands Colley a spot in Friday's quarterfinal race and moves him on to OU's all-time performance list at seventh. Colley will run in the 800 meters quarterfinal at 8:45 p.m. CT on Friday.

Earlier in the evening, sophomore Joseph Sheffield earned a lane in Friday's 100-meter dash quarterfinals, clocking a 10.32 for the 13th-best time in the first round. Sheffield returns to the track Friday at 8:15 p.m. CT with a trip to Austin on the line. Junior Jackson Webb finished in 10.50 for 32nd place. Although he missed the quarterfinal cut, Webb will join Sheffield on the track to represent the Sooners in the men's 4x100-meter relay on Saturday.

Like Webb, four other Sooners did not advance in their first events but will have another shot later in the weekend. Sophomore Jai'Lyn Merriweather fell short of a quarterfinal time in the women's 400-meter dash, taking 37th place with a time of 54.47. Merriweather will join a trio of Sooner women to run the 4x400-meter relay on Saturday night.

In the women's hammer throw, sophomore Lauren Jones took 35th place at 186-9 (56.92m). Jones will have a second chance to clinch a spot at Nationals when she competes in the women's discus Friday at 2 p.m.

Freshman Symone Washington leapt just four-hundredths of a meter short of cracking the top twelve in the women's long jump, claiming a jump of 19-10.75 (6.06m) for sixteenth place, while sophomore Essence Thomas took 34th with a mark of 18-11.75 (5.78m). Both Washington and Thomas will join three other Sooners for Saturday's triple jump.

For the rest of the Sooners competing on Thursday, the 2019 outdoor campaign came to a close.

In OU's first event of the meet, freshman Bayley Campbell narrowly missed a qualifying mark, finishing 13th in the men's hammer throw with a mark of 210-3 (64.08m). Sophomore Eddie Jeans finished 21st with a throw 204-9 (62.40m). For Campbell and Jeans, the NCAA Regional appearances cap strong outdoor campaigns, where each Sooner moved to second and fourth on OU's all-time performance list, respectively.

Sophomore Falyn Reaugh cleared 5-7 (1.70m) in the women's high jump to finish in 18th place. Reaugh improves by eight spots from her 26th-place finish as a freshman at the 2018 NCAA West Preliminary and closes out a sophomore year that included a trip to the NCAA Championships during indoor season.

Luke George completed his freshman season with a 3:51.80 finish in the men's 1,500-meter run, while sophomore Isaiah Levingston wrapped up the year with a time of 53.60 in the men's 400-meter hurdles.

In the men's long jump, senior Greg Vann closed out his career as a Sooner with a leap of 22-11.25 (6.99m) in his third NCAA Regional Preliminary appearance in four years.

The Sooners are slated to compete in 16 more events on the weekend.

Action resumes Friday at 2 p.m. with the women's discus throw. Live results are available through Flash Results, and the meet is available to stream via FloTrack with a subscription.
