NORMAN – The Oklahoma women’s tennis team concluded its fall slate at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational on Sunday.
"We competed well this weekend and I am proud of how much we have grown this fall," said head coach Audra Cohen. "I felt we really took advantage of that this tournament and we better prepared ourselves for a good start to the spring season."
The Sooners went 10-12 in combined singles and doubles action, with Simran Sethi leading the way with a fourth-place finish in the tournament.
In the round of 32, Sethi made quick work of Notre Dame’s Zoe Spence, winning 6-2, 6-2, to move to the round of 16. Sethi was littled time as she gave up just one game to win the first frame before Sasha Belaya of Illinois retired in the second to give the senior a 6-1, 4-2 victory.
In the quarterfinal, the senior shut out Northern Arizona’s Chiara Tomasetti in the first frame before Tomasetti fought back to win the second, extending the match. Sethi came out on top, 6-0, 6-7 (3), 7-5, to advance to the semifinal, where she was defeated by Emilee Duong (Illinois), 7-6 (3), 6-1.
In the third-place match, Sethi fell to Daniela Pedraza Novak, also of Illinois, 6-2, 6-2. Sethi finishes the fall slate at 8-7 in singles.
"I’m proud of Simran this week. She moved very well all weekend and she was able to dictate play for a majority of each of her matches," said Cohen.
Malene Stripp wrapped up the tournament in the Sparky consolation draw semifinal. The senior was defeated by Duong, 7-5, 6-4, in her opening match, then moved to the consolation bracket. By virtue of a walkover in the Sparky round of 16, Stripp advanced to the quarterfinal, where she handled Ohio State’s Andrea Ballinger, 6-2, 6-1.
Stripp’s run came to an end in the semifinal, where she was defeated by Cameron Corse of Notre Dame, 6-4, 6-4. The Copenhagen, Denmark, native finishes fall play at 5-7.
Christie Brigante went 2-2 on the weekend. The senior defeated Cal’s Vivian Glozman, 6-4, 6-1, in the main draw round of 32 before falling to Mia Rabinowitz of Illinois, 6-2, 6-1, in the round of 16. Brigante moved to the Maroon consolation draw, where she fell to Cameron Corse of Notre Dame, 6-4, 6-4.
The senior gave up just one game en route to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Cal's Audrey Mayer, in an extra match to close out weekend. Brigante wraps up the fall at 8-5.
Freshman Camila Romero also won two matches and lost two matches. Romero fell to Mary Beth Hurley of Ohio State in a hard-fought round of 32 match, 2-6, 7-5, 6-3, to start the weekend.
In the Sparky consolation draw, she was defeated by San Diego’s Sophia Chow, 7-5, 6-2. In extra matches, Romero took down two San Diego players, beating Carolin Nonnemacher, 6-4, 6-0, and Kati Kurakas 6-3, 6-1, to finish fall tournament action with a 4-6 singles mark.
In doubles action, Brigante and Sethi compiled a 2-1 record on the weekend. The pair defeated Illinois’ Belaya and Jade Hilton, 6-2, and Allison Miller and Rachel Chong of Notre Dame, 6-4. Their sole loss came at the hands of Fresno State’s Alessia Dario and Katerina Stloukalova, 6-4.
In their first doubles match, Stripp and Romero were defeated by Tomasetti and Hanneke Lodeswijks (Northern Arizona), 6-1. The duo then fell to Arizona State’s Savannah Slaysman, Sasa Klanecek, 6-0, and Rabinowitz and Pedraza Novak of Illinois in a match that came down to the wire, 7-6 (7).
The Sooners will have a brief hiatus before opening spring dual-match action in January. The schedule will be released at a later date.
