NORMAN – The Oklahoma women’s tennis team is slated for the ITA Central Region Championships beginning Thursday at the University of Kansas.
Seniors Christiana Brigante, Simran Sethi and Malene Stripp and freshman Camila Romero will make the trip. The event features a 128-athlete singles draw and a 64-team doubles bracket.
In singles play, Romero is slated to face Lara Tupper of SIU-Edwardsville; Sethi takes on Ellie Wright from Missouri; Stripp will play Creighton’s Ashley Ishimura; and Brigante faces Oleksandra Doroshenko of Southeast Missouri State.
In doubles play, Sethi and Brigante open with Southeastern Missouri’s Anais Emelie and Maja Lundell. Stripp and Romero will take on Ishimura and Darby Rosette from Creighton.
At last year’s ITA Central Region Championships, OU's Lily Miyazaki brought home the singles title with a win over in-state rival Oklahoma State’s Carla Tur Mari. Sethi went 2-1 on the tournament, while Stripp was 1-3.
Romero will make her first appearance at ITA Central Regional, while Brigante will compete in the event for the first time since her freshman campaign in 2014, when she went 1-1.
Singles and doubles champions receive an automatic bid to the ITA Fall National Championships in Indian Wells, Calif., November 1-5. Miyazaki has already punched her ticket to the event by advancing to the consolation singles final at the Rivera ITA All-American in early October.
