EUGENE, Ore.—The University of Oklahoma track and field team begins competition Wednesday at the 2018 NCAA Outdoor National Championships in Eugene on the campus of the University of Oregon.

This is the sixth consecutive outdoor championships to be held at historic Hayward Field in Eugene, and the last until 2021 while the stadium undergoes renovation.

Ten Sooners qualified in individual events this weekend plus one men’s relay team.

Senior Jess Woodard will be competing in two events, a national qualifier in the women’s discus throw and shot put. This is the fourth consecutive outdoor nationals meet the Marlton, N.J., native has participated in. Woodard has garnered first team All-America honors in each of the past two seasons in the shot put. She has claimed six shot put victories this outdoor season to go along with one discus throw title.

Fellow throws senior Ashley Bryant will compete in the women’s hammer throw competition as the eight seed, reaching the national meet with a mark of 208-4 (63.50 meters) at the NCAA West Preliminary Round. Bryant has collected four hammer throw titles this outdoor season and will be competing in her second outdoor nationals meet.

Also participating in the women’s shot put finals will be sophomore Meia Gordon. Gordon reached nationals for the first time in her career with a throw of 53-10.5 (16.42 meters) at regionals.

Running in her first NCAA outdoor nationals is redshirt junior Sarah Scott. Scott claimed three steeplechase titles this outdoor season, including the conference crown in the event with a school-record time of 9:59.53. Scott will compete in the 3,000-meter steeplechase semifinal on Thursday with the opportunity to advance to Saturday’s final.

Competing in her fourth consecutive NCAA Outdoor Championships is senior Ama Pipi. Pipi has three outdoor victories this season, two coming in the 200 meters and one in the 400 meters. Pipi will be competing in the 400 meters this weekend, qualifying with a time of 52.45 seconds at the West regional.

Senior Leya Buchanan will also be running in her fourth outdoor nationals, but first as an individual competitor. Buchanan will run in the 100-meter dash, qualifying with a time of 11.30 seconds at regionals. The senior from Ontario, Canada, won two event titles this outdoor season, one coming in the 100-meter dash and one in the 200 meters.

Fellow senior Medinah Spencer will also be competing in her first national meet as an individual. Spencer qualified in the 400-meter hurdles with a school-record time of 57.93 seconds in Sacramento at regionals.

Freshman Camri Austin will participate in the women’s 100-meter hurdles semifinals on Thursday, qualifying with the second-fastest time in school history at 13.18 seconds. Austin won one title in the 100-meter hurdles this outdoor season at the Crimson Tide Invitational.

Two Sooners on the men’s team qualified in individual events and one men’s relay team will run this weekend at nationals.

Freshman Vernon Turner will compete in his first outdoor national championship in the men’s high jump finals on Friday evening. The freshman has had an exceptional debut season for the Sooners, winning three outdoor high jump titles including the conference crown in the event. Turner comes into the national meet with the second highest mark this outdoor season at 7-5.75 (2.28 meters). The mark also stands as the outdoor school record in the high jump.

Fellow OU freshman Papay Glaywulu will be jumping at his first outdoor national meet in the men’s triple jump. Glaywulu qualified for nationals with a personal-best mark of 52-8 (16.05 meters) in his last jump at regionals. The freshman moved from 14th place to third in the competition on his last jump in Sacramento to qualify for the outdoor national championships.

The Oklahoma men’s 4x100-meter relay team of Bennie Wesley, Joseph Sheffield, Jackson Webb, and Xavier Brown will be the first Sooners to compete this week, running in the 4x1 semifinal on Wednesday. The relay team is the first men’s relay squad to qualify for nationals since 2012 and has won two titles this outdoor season.
