NORMAN— The Big 12 Conference announced the individual performers of the year awards, along with coaches of the year Friday morning. OU freshman high jumper Vernon Turner was named Co-Freshman of the Year for his performance throughout the 2018 outdoor regular season and Big 12 Outdoor Championship.
Turner won his first conference title in Waco, Texas, last weekend at the Big 12 Outdoor Championship, jumping an outdoor school-record 7-5.75 (2.28 meters) in the men’s high jump. The title is one of three high jump victories Turner collected his freshman outdoor season to go along with titles at Penn Relays and the John Jacobs Invitational. His outdoor jump of 7-5.75 (2.28 meters) recorded at the conference meet ranked second nationally this outdoor season.
He won two additional titles during the indoor season and placed second at the Big 12 Indoor Championship in his respective event. Turner broke the indoor school record while winning the high jump title at the Tyson Invitational, clearing the bar at 7-7.75 (2.33 meters).
Turner will continue his postseason in Sacramento, Calif., next weekend at the NCAA West Region
