OU No. 5 In Preseason Coaches Poll

NORMAN — Winner of the last three Big 12 titles, the Oklahoma football team starts year two of the Lincoln Riley era ranked fifth in the preseason Amway Coaches Poll, which was released Thursday.

This marks the 17th time in the last 19 seasons that OU has been ranked eighth or higher in the annual preseason coaches poll, and 13th time in the last 19 years it has been ranked fifth or higher.

The Sooners are one of five Big 12 teams in this year's preseason Amway Coaches Poll. TCU is 11 spots behind OU at No. 16, while West Virginia is ranked 20th, Texas 21st and Oklahoma State 25th. Kansas State is seventh among teams receiving votes.

The rest of the top 10 consists of No. 1 Alabama, No. 2 Clemson, No. 3 Ohio State, No. 4 Georgia, No. 6 Washington, No. 7 Wisconsin, No. 8 Miami (Fla.), No. 9 Penn State and No. 10 Auburn.

Oklahoma, which opens fall camp Friday, was the preseason pick to win the Big 12 Conference again by the media and boasts a league-high seven players on the 2018 Preseason All-Big 12 Team.

Junior running back Rodney Anderson, junior wide receiver Marquise Brown, sophomore tight end Grant Calcaterra, junior offensive lineman Bobby Evans, senior offensive lineman Ben Powers and senior kicker/punter Austin Seibert were among the 29 players who were named to the all-conference squad by position. Freshman defensive back Brendan Radley-Hiles was named Preseason Big 12 Newcomer of the Year.

OU opens the 2018 season by hosting Florida Atlantic on Sept. 1 at 11 a.m. CT at Gaylord Family – Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. The Owls received 27 points in the preseason coaches poll, which equates to the No. 33 overall spot.
