Seven Sooners Ready for World Team Trials

NORMAN – The University of Oklahoma wrestling team is sending seven athletes to Akron, Ohio, to compete in the U23 World Team Trial Qualifier this weekend.

Freshmen Jake Boyd (97 kg), Dom Demas (65 kg), Anthony Mantanona (79 kg), Matthew Waddell (86 kg), and Jakob Woodley (92 kg), redshirt freshman Jeremy Thomas (74 kg) and redshirt junior Jake Rubio (61 kg) will all represent OU at the national tournament.

The winner from each weight class will secure a spot on the U23 US World Team. All seven Sooners will compete in the freestyle tournament on Saturday and Sunday, while Demas will also compete in the Greeco-Roman tournament on Friday.

Boyd, Demas and Woodley all competed in the U20 World Team Trials two weeks ago. Demas will have a chance to claim a spot on another US national team as he qualified for the country’s U20 team in Rochester, Minn. Boyd and Woodley will get another chance to be a part of Team USA after falling short in May. Boyd fell in his second match of the competition while Woodley nearly won the 92 kg challenge tourament, but was edged 7-6 in the championship.
