NORMAN, Okla.— A sweep in doubles and singles led the No. 18 Oklahoma women’s tennis team to a 7-0 shutout over the West Virginia Mountaineers (3-15, 0-7) Friday, April 4, at the Headington Family Tennis Center.

"We did what we had to do," OU head coach David Mullins said. "I was really happy with how we conducted ourselves because we could have let a couple of those matches drag on a bit more."

For the third time this season and second straight match, the Sooners (14-3, 4-1) kept their opponent from winning a single match.

Seniors Whitney Ritchie and Mia Lancaster showed no mercy in doubles as they topped West Virginia’s Kaja Mrgole and Oana Manole 8-1 to give the Sooners an early advantage.

The battle to clinch the doubles point came down to senior Whitney Wofford and Morgan Chumney on court two and senior Hermon Brhane and sophomore Zita Engbroks on court three.

Ultimately, it was Wofford and Chumney who clinched the point with an 8-3 victory on court two. Brhane and Engbroks were just one serve behind and finished with an 8-4 victory to give OU the doubles sweep.

"Morgan and Whitney did a nice job," Mullins said. "They got off to the start I was hoping they would and found a way to extend points and be a bit more comfortable once the point began."

In singles play, sophomore Emma Devine easily sailed to a 6-0, 6-1 win over WVU’s Irinka Toidze to give Oklahoma the 2-0 lead. Following close behind was Chumney with a 6-3, 6-0 win at the No. 3 position.

Clinching the match for Oklahoma was Ritchie with a 6-2, 6-1 decision over Kaja Mrgole.

Adding to the Sooners shutout were Brhane, Lancaster and Engbroks who all cruised to straight set victories on courts one, four and six respectively.

The Sooners will be back in action Sunday, April 6, at 12 p.m. as they take on the Iowa State Cyclones.  Sunday will be Whitney Wofford Day and will feature a serving contest, a racquet giveaway and free pizza for all in attendance
