Matt Armstrong joined head coach Matt Potter's staff in 2013 as a volunteer assistant coach. Armstrong brings an impressive background as both a player and coach to Potter's staff and handles video and statistical analysis and player development for the Sooners.
"With a youth national team pedigree as a player, a passion for the game and a desire to coach at the highest levels, Matt complements and fits the vision and philosophy of our program," Potter said upon Armstrong's hiring. "He has the personality and credentials to help us reach the standards and expectations we set for ourselves, as well as those of our athletic department as a whole."
Prior to OU, Armstrong spent a season as a second assitant coach on the men's soccer staff at UNLV. He has also coached as an undergraduate assistant at New Mexico (2011) and guided U-17 boys' team Rio Vista United in Albuquerque to a state championship in 2011.
Armstrong is familiar with the landscape of NCAA soccer, having played at New Mexico and Notre Dame as an undergraduate. While a member of the Fighting Irish squad, Armstrong was named to the Soccer America and College Soccer News All-Freshman teams. He was also an honorable mention All-Big East pick as a freshman at Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish reached the NCAA tournament all three seasons that Armstrong was on the squad, including a quarterfinals appearance in 2007 and second round appearance sin 2008 and 2009.
Armstrong wrapped up his collegiate career at New Mexico in 2010, leading the Lobos to the second round of the NCAA Tournament as a senior. After receiving his degree from UNM, he played professionally for HFC Haarlem in Holland and E.C. Vitoria in Bahia, Brazil.
"Matt's presence in our program gives our staff another dimension as we continue to serve as a resource to our student-athletes," Potter said. "He joins what I consider to be an exceptional team behind our team of student-athletes."
Armstrong graduated from New Mexico in the summer of 2012 with a bachelor of arts degree in university studies.
