NORMAN, Okla. -- After a home-opening loss to UCLA in which the 11th-ranked Sooners were outrebounded and overmatched in the paint, OU head coach Sherri Coale wanted her team to step up their aggression. They received the message.

Oklahoma set a team record for defense as it defeated Saint Louis, 68-33, at the Lloyd Noble Center Sunday.

OU opened the game with a 19-0 run and led 40-10 at halftime, matching its fewest points ever allowed in a half.

"I thought our first half was really good," Coale said. "We played really hard and we played well together. We shot it really well and when we decided to go into the post really good things happened. Defensively, they had three points with six or seven minutes remaining in the first half. I thought we really communicated well and it was tough for them."

Nicole Griffin scored 15 points to lead the Sooners. Aaryn Ellenberg and Whitney Hand also scored in double-figures for Oklahoma, adding 13 and 11 points, respectively.

Jacy Bradley led the Billikens with 11 points.

"The thing about the way we guard," Coale added, "if we do it right, it may take them 28 seconds each possession down, which is kind of why in the second half when things started to slow down, the pace was the same as it was in the first half. It felt like everything went slower but it was really the same. We just really didn't give them anything easy."

The Billikens were held to just one field goal in 19 attempts until the final 2 1/2 minutes of the first half and were 9-of-24 from the field in the second period.

Oklahoma travels to Honolulu, Hawaii, for the Rainbow Wahine Showdown at the Stan Sheriff Center this week. The Sooners play three games in three days, beginning with Arkansas Friday, Nov. 23, at 6 p.m. Central. OU will face Oregon on Saturday at 6 p.m. and tournament host Hawaii Sunday at 6:30 p.m.
