ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior Steven Legendre claimed the all-around with a score of 89.250, as the second-ranked Oklahoma men’s gymnastics team defeated sixth-ranked Michigan on Saturday.
OU moves to 10-0 on the season, as the Sooners scored a 357.750 to beat the defending NCAA National Champions (355.400) in their first meeting of the regular season.
“It was a pretty impressive day. I felt like the guys came in well prepared and they did a great job,” said OU Head Coach Mark Williams. “I feel like we are really on track heading into the postseason.”
The win marks the second straight victory over the Wolverines at Cliff Keen Arena, as Oklahoma claimed its eighth victory of a top 10 opponent.
OU won five out of six events each of the team event on floor (59.400), pommel horse (58.600), rings (59.350), vault (63.100) and parallel bars (59.450).
Highlighting the meet for Oklahoma was Legendre winning his second straight all-around, which was the 12th of his career. Legendre claimed an individual event title on vault with a score of 16.050.
Sophomore Alex Naddour also took his fourth pommel horse title of the season with a score of 15.650.
Sophomore Jacob Dalton, fresh off his American Cup third-place finish, posted a top scores on floor (15.350), rings (15.100) to take two individual titles.
“Jake and Steve helped carry the team,” added Williams. “They are doing their job and it was a great environment for the meet. I am proud of the guy’s effort today and we are looking forward to the meet against Penn State and Illinois.”
Altogether, the Sooners claimed five out of the six individual event titles on the night.
Oklahoma returns home for its last regular season meet against Penn State and Illinois on Saturday, March 19, at 7 p.m. in the McCasland Field House.
“We have a third of the team graduating. It will be a special night,” continued Williams. “We want everyone to come out and support us in the field house and with our seniors well. They have done an outstanding job and it should be an awesome event.”
The meet will be Senior Night for seniors CJ Grimes, Ian Jackson, Steven Legendre, Anthony Naddour and Bobby Shortle.
