PALM SPRINGS, Calif. -- Locked in a pitchers' duel, senior Jessica Shults used a historic blast to propel the No. 1 Oklahoma softball team to a 5-0 win over No. 19 Arizona Thursday at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.

The Sooners were holding a 1-0 lead entering the bottom of the fifth inning, but both starting pitchers had held the other team to just two hits. Shults, batting with a 1-1 count to lead off the frame, drilled a shot to right center field to double OU's lead.

The solo blast was her third of the year and the 57th of her career, setting a Big 12 and school record for career home runs. It broke a tie with Texas' Megan Gibson and former Sooner Amber Flores who both hit 56 homers in their respective careers.

Oklahoma wasn't done in the inning, though as senior Keilani Ricketts followed Shults' at-bat with a solo home run of her own. Having cleared the fences in left field, it was Ricketts' third home run of the season and the second time that the pair went back-to-back this season.

Later in the fifth, with two out and sophomore Shelby Pendley on first base, fellow sophomore Jessica Vest launched the first home run of her career to left field to extend the lead to 5-0.

The run support was more than enough for Gascoigne.

In improving to 6-0 on the season, the senior struck out 12 batters and allowed just three hits and two walks.

After giving up a two-out single in the first, Gascoigne set down the next 10 batters she faced. She struck out four batters in a row at one point between the second and third innings and finished the game with her third shutout of the year.

The win over No. 19 Arizona improved the Sooners' record against ranked teams to 6-0 on the year. In those games, OU has outscored the competition, 41-0.

Oklahoma scored the game's first run in the third inning without recording a hit.

Ricketts drew a one-out walk and was pinch run for by freshman Kady Self. That was followed by back-to-back walks by Pendley and junior Brittany Williams. Junior Destinee Martinez followed with a sacrifice fly to center field to score Self.

Oklahoma is back in action at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic with a pair of games on Friday. First up is a contest against UC Santa Barbara at 5:30 p.m. That is followed with a matchup against former Big 12 foe Nebraska at 8 p.m. CT.
