ANN ARBOR, MICH. – The third-ranked Oklahoma women’s gymnastics team defeated its third top 10 opponent this season after topping No. 8 Michigan, 196.650-196.275, on Saturday in Ann Arbor.
Oklahoma (11-0, 3-0 Big 12) fell behind after the first rotation but pulled ahead after posting 13 scores of 9.8 or higher on the final three events. OU took home all four team event titles for the sixth time this season while an OU gymnast took home at least a share of three of the five event titles.
Kayla Nowak and Sara Stone shared the vault title with a pair of 9.9s, Natasha Kelley took home the bars title with a 9.9 while Megan Ferguson won the beam title with a 9.9.
Nowak competed on all four events for OU, it was the first time since March 12, 2010, that the Sooners had an all-around competitor. Nowak finished second in the all-around with a 39.375, behind the nation’s No. 1 ranked all-arounder Kylee Botterman, who posted a 39.400.
Oklahoma started the meet on bars with a 49.000. The Sooners trailed Michigan after the first rotation as the Wolverines posted a 49.150 on vault to start.
Kelley led the team from the anchor position with a 9.9 on the apparatus, winning the bars title. The score was Kelley’s second score of 9.9 or higher on the event this season and her fifth bars title win of the year.
Freshman Taylor Spears added a 9.825 on bars for the Sooners, tying her second-best score of the season that was previously set at N.C. State on Jan. 14.
The Sooners took a two-tenth lead over Michigan after the second rotation, with a 49.250-showing on vault.
In her first appearance in OU’s vault lineup this season, and just her second career vault at OU, Nowak posted a career-high 9.9 to win a share of the vault title.
Stone also won a share of the vault title after posting a 9.9 for the Sooners. The junior has scored a 9.9 or higher in four of the last five competitions.
Both teams scored a 49.125 in the third rotation, OU on floor and Michigan on beam.
Ferguson and Stone led the team on floor, both posting a 9.875 on the event. Ferguson tied her season-high with the score, while Stone added her third-straight score of 9.875 or higher.
Nowak added a 9.85 for the Sooners, her eighth score of 9.85 or higher on floor this year.
With the matching scores from the two teams in the third rotation, OU held its two-tenth lead over the Wolverines entering the final event.
OU clinched the win over Michigan with a 49.275 on beam, the Sooners’ third-best score of the season on the event.
Ferguson posted a team-high 9.9 against Michigan, her fourth-straight score of 9.9 or higher on beam.
Kelley and Nowak added a pair of 9.85s for the Sooners while Madison Mooring posted a 9.8 on the event to help OU top the Wolverines.
The Sooners return to Norman for two-straight home meets to end the regular season. OU hosts Illinois, Ohio State and TWU on March 4 at 7 p.m., at the Lloyd Noble Center for “Year of the Fan” Night.
