Oklahoma and Marist met for the fifth time. The Sooners’ won the previous four meetings in the series.
It was Oklahoma second visit to Poughkeepsie, N.Y. On that trip, the Sooners needed overtime to defeat the Red Foxes 80-71 on Dec. 9, 2009. Nyeshia Stevenson hit a school record nine 3-pointers and totaled a career-high 32 points to lead the Sooners. OU defeated Marist 68-55 last December in Norman. Marist’s first NCAA Tournament trip resulted in a first round loss, 58-45, to Oklahoma in Tempe, Ariz., on March 20, 2004.
Oklahoma head coach Sherri Coale, Marist head coach Brian Giorgis and Sooner guard Aaryn Ellenberg were all members of USA Basketball’s 2013 World University Games championship team. Coale served as head coach and Giorgis was an assistant. Ellenberg started five of six games, averaging 9.2 points and 38 percent 3-point shooting.
Oklahoma used an 11-0 scoring run to grab a 19-18 lead after holding Marist scoreless from the field for 5 ½ minutes in the first half. Marist was 0-for-3 from 3-point range with five turnovers during the span. Marist finally ended its field goal drought exactly 11 minutes from the start when Emma O’Connor made a 3-pointer to give the Red Foxes a 26-25 lead with 2:03 remaining in the first half.
Marist led 29-27 at halftime.
