Oklahoma Head Coach Sherri Coale
Opening comment:
“I will first of all say that Western Illinois plays hard and they played well tonight. They shot the ball extremely well and they played their tails off for 40 minutes. I have such respect for the way they’re coached, the way they compete, and they’re going to win a lot of basketball games if they play that hard and shoot that well. I think we did some good things. We had some periods where we plateaued and lost our focus, lost our concentration. We were able to zap it back but we have got to get rid of those lapses. It’s part of the process, it’s why we play games, it’s why we do what we do.”

On the turnover ratio:
“You know what? This is like the fourth time this has happened. We are on this beautiful roll, where our assist to turnover ratio is almost too long. We’re scoring it, we’re sharing it, we’re going into halftime and we have four or five I think. Then about the six or eight minute mark to go it turns into recess. Part of that is young guys getting accustomed to playing and staying attentive to the details even when you’re really far ahead. There are lots of reasons for it and none of them count for anything. We have good players and we shouldn’t be turning the ball over like that. I guess I should be happy that there’s a saving grace. We played three quarters of the game without throwing it all over the place.”

On if the team is ready to play Duke:
“The big, long answer is simply this. Basketball seasons are long and building a team is a process. I told the kids I heard Villanova head coach Jay Wright in the locker room have this great phrase after the Kansas game where he said, ‘We’re building our souls.’ You don’t do that kind of stuff quickly. It’s not going to happen in a week, it’s not going to happen in three days. The whole idea is brick by brick you build those things so that in the spring you can go and do something really special. We have a lot of things we can improve upon. Rebounding is one of them. Consistent defending is one of them. Shooting well in both halves is another. We have all kinds of things. Getting all of the guys the best possible spot for them at the same time. We had Vegas great in the first half and we had Gioya show up in the second half and you kind of have this thing pieced together. The whole idea is to roll toward the point where that can all happen simultaneously, and that’s why we practice, that’s why we play. That’s what the point of all this is. Will we be a finished product on Sunday? No, not at all. But I don’t think Duke is either. The whole idea is to be better than they are for 40 minutes on Sunday afternoon.”

On if they want and/or need a win against Duke to catapult them into this season:
“I think that schedules give you opportunities and when opportunities present themselves you better snag them. I’ll tell you what, Sunday is an opportunity. You can talk around it, below it, and beside it, but it’s an opportunity and we need to take advantage of it.”

Oklahoma Senior Guard Aaryn Ellenberg
On gaining confidence for the upcoming game against Duke from her performance tonight:
“Definitely. I think it’s going to be important for me to play well and to shoot well. I kind of haven’t been doing that lately. I don’t really know why. It felt good to knock down a couple of shots and get in a rhythm so going into that game, that’s what I am going to look to do.”

Oklahoma Senior Guard Morgan Hook
On tonight’s performance and preparing for Duke:
“When Aaryn makes shots we all kind of relax a little bit. She is the one we look to on offense. In transition, if it’s a toss up between two, I am probably going to go to Aaryn’s side. When she makes shots it kind of gives us a breath of fresh air. I think seeing all of us make threes and score the ball well before we go play Duke is a great way to start. Like coach said, we had eight to 10 possessions of playing great defense. We know we can play that way and that’s the way we are going to have to play on Sunday.”

Oklahoma Junior Guard Sharane Campbell
On tonight’s performance and preparing for Duke:
“I felt like we did well on crashing. Rebounds, they give life; on offense and on defense. It’s instant offense. Aaryn scoring points… threes are always good. They make you feel good. I think we are ready. I really do.”

On if this team feels like they need to beat a top ranked team:
“Honestly, it is just rankings. It’s another game but at the same time it’s a big game of course. We just have to play how we know how to play. I’m not going to say they are the number two team so we have to do this or this differently. We just have to play like we know how to play. That’s all we have to do.”
