Recap |  Box Score |  Notes

Head Coach Sherri Coale
• Opening statement:
“I was really pleased with our energy in the second half.  I thought we turned it up defensively, played much harder and communicated much better.  I’m pretty pleased with the offense tonight, but too many turnovers late; we got that number up high.  But from the first five or six -- a pretty good job of taking care of the basketball.  We once again shot it well from 3, which makes everything look prettier.”

• On Carlee Roethlisberger’s performance tonight:
“Carlee was just terrific off the bench tonight.  Obviously four-of-five from 3, that speaks for itself.  It was defensive effort, it was blocking out, it was communicating that got everybody going.  She just really had a good game.”

• On this being Coale’s deepest team:
“It seems to be.  I think what remains to be seen still is in clutch situations and pressure situations when people come off the bench, how they will respond and how they will adapt.  I feel like it will be good and all signs indicate that it will, but until it happens, we won’t know for sure.”

• On Whitney Hand’s defense:
“The loudest shout from the crowd tonight was probably when she blocked that shot, it was like ‘she’s not supposed to do that, she’s a shooter girl.’  People are going to talk about her offensive skills, they’re special. She’s just an extraordinary shooter and just one of those that doesn’t come along very often.  We’re very glad and feel very blessed to have her.  But what makes her a really extraordinary player is how hard she competes on every possession, regardless of time, score and the situation.  She going to compete, she’s on the floor and in the passing lanes, she’s sprinting down and transitioning every time -- just really a competitor on all faces of the game.”

Sophomore Forward Carlee Roethlisberger
• On how her game has improved from last season:
“I think confidence is a huge thing for me. Also, without my team out there tonight helping me I couldn’t have made those shots.”

On playing a different position than last year:
“In practice I have been playing down low more. It really all depends on what the defense is doing and where the team needs me.”

Freshman Guard Whitney Hand
• On the preseason accolades and talk about what she can be:
“It’s all hype and nothing has been proven yet.  I guess it is not about how good people think I am, it is about where our team is trying to go. We have great leadership and I want to fit in wherever I can fit in.”

• On starting the regular season:
“We are so excited. We cannot wait. We will get out there tomorrow and go to work and it is all going to fall into place.”
