NORMAN, Okla. -- Following a dramatic run to the NCAA Tournament's Sweet 16 in Oklahoma City, the University of Oklahoma women's basketball team boosted its incoming class with the addition of a local high school senior Thursday.

T'ona Edwards, a 5-foot-5 guard from Northeast Academy in Oklahoma City, filed a National Letter of Intent with the Sooners, OU head women's basketball coach Sherri Coale announced.

Edwards averaged 16.7 points seven rebounds, six assists and nearly four steals per game to lead the Vikings to a 30-0 record and state championship in 2013.

"T'ona is a terrific athlete who gives us immediate depth at the point guard position," Coale said. "She is a proven winner, as she led her team to a state championship this year, and she is a competitor."

Edwards was named The Oklahoman's Little All-City Girls' Basketball Player of the Year and to the Oklahoma Girls Basketball Coaches Association's All-State Small East Team.

The Northeast point guard caught attention after the Class 2A team toppled the best from larger classes, defeating top-10 teams from 5A Del City, 6A Bixby and 6A Midwest City in the December Mid-Del Tournament before cruising to a state title.

Edwards joins Midwest City Carl Albert guard Gioya Carter, Shaya Kellogg (Ames, Iowa), and Derica Wyatt (Nashville, Tenn.), who field during November's early signing period, as members of OU women's basketball's incoming freshman class.
