Men's Hoops Earns NABC Academic Honor
July 23, 2014

NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma men's basketball program was recognized by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) on Wednesday with the organization's Team Academic Excellence Award.

Created by the NABC Committee on Academics, the award honors outstanding academic achievement by teams with a cumulative grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better for the 2013-14 season.

OU, which recorded a program-record 3.06 GPA, was one of 28 Division I teams to meet the award's criteria. Only six other teams from the five "power" conferences (Big 12, ACC, Big Ten, Pac-12 and SEC) were also honored. Those schools are co-Big 12 members Iowa State and Texas, and Florida, Kentucky, South Carolina and Stanford.

In order to earn an NABC Team Academic Excellence Award, institutions must count the GPAs of all men's basketball student-athletes who competed during the 2013-14 season.

The 2013-14 Sooners went 23-10 overall and finished in second place in the Big 12 with a 12-6 mark. They were a No. 5 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
