NORMAN, Okla. – The final week of the regular season gets underway Wednesday evening as Oklahoma pays a pre-Thanksgiving visit to West Virginia at 5:30 pm.
1. About the Sooners
Oklahoma, riding a three-match win streak, take its 21-7 overall and 9-5 Big 12 record on the road. Senior middle blocker Sallie McLaurin leads the Sooners with 3.73 kills per set and is tops in the league in hitting percentage at .428. Sophomore libero Taylor Migliazzo is averaging a team-high 3.93 digs per set. Senior outside hitter Keila Rodriguez contributes equally on both sides of the ball with 3.33 digs per set and 2.37 kills per set, ranking second and third, respectively. For the season, OU is outhitting its opponents, .244-.185.
2. Last Time They Met
The Sooners hit a collective .333 in a quick 3-0 sweep over West Virginia; 25-15, 25-14, 25-20 on October 26. Despite totaling just five blocks, Oklahoma held the Mountaineers to a .079 attack rate. Three OU players reached double digits, led by McLaurin with 14 and a .345 hitting percentage. Redshirt-freshman Madison Ward hit a match-high .478 on 11 kills.
3. All-Time vs. WVU
The Sooners have won all three match-ups against the Mountaineers. Oklahoma swept the season series in 2012 and won at Northwestern in 1999, 309, in the first meeting between the two programs.
4. “Tough Cookie”
Against Texas Tech last Wednesday, senior defensive specialist Eden Williams recorded 15 digs in three sets of action during the Sooners’ four-set victory. The total was her highest since notching 12 against Kansas State on October 12 and 10th time in double figures all season. Williams accomplished this after sitting out the first set due to dislocating her left pinky in warm-ups. After the match, Restrepo noted, “Eden is a tough cookie. We are going to miss her leadership along with her on-court contributions and everything she means to our program.”
5. Not Up in Here!
McLaurin took over the top spot in the OU record book for career block assists on at Iowa State on November 9 with the 500th of her career. She has lifted her record total to 512. McLaurin currently ranks third all-time in total blocks with 609 behind Margaret Page (1983-87) and Gloria Holcomb (1990-93) at 640 and 613, respectively.
6. OU in the Classroom
Last Tuesday, four Sooners were honored with Academic All-Big 12 honors. The OU senior trio of Mindy Gowen, Sallie McLaurin and Eden Williams all earned First Team honors for the third straight season with a grade-point average of 3.20 or better. Junior Kaitlyn Drawe gained selection to the Second Team with a GPA between 3.00 and 3.19.
