NORMAN, Okla. – The Sooners near the mid-way point of the Big 12 slate when they visit TCU for a 6:30 match-up on Wednesday night. Oklahoma returns home to take on West Virginia at 11:00 am on Saturday, October 26. Admission is free.
MID-WEEK MATCH NOTES
1. About the Sooners
Oklahoma is 16-4 on the year and 4-2 in the Big 12 following Saturday’s sweep over Baylor. Senior middle blocker Sallie McLaurin leads the way for the Sooner attack with 3.68 kills per set and a league-leading .451 hitting percentage. Sophomore outside hitter Kierra Holst is second on the team in both categories at 3.00 and .237. Sophomore libero Taylor Migliazzo leads the team with 3.88 digs per set, while senior outside hitter Keila Rodriguez has contributed on both sides of the ball with 3.38 digs and 2.27 kills per set.
2. All-Time vs. TCU
The Horned Frogs took the first match played between the two squads, 3-1, in 2004. Since then, the Sooners are unbeaten and lead the all-time series, 6-1. Oklahoma swept the season series in 2012, TCU’s first year in the Big 12, by scores of 3-0 and 3-1.
3. 1,000 and Counting
McLaurin notched the 1,000th kill of her career with her third of the night in a 3-2 win over No. 25 BYU on September 7. In that match, she registered a then season-high 21 kills, to go with a .677 hitting percentage and eight blocks. McLaurin enters the match with 1,182. She is is just one back of tying Margaret Page (1983-87) for 10th all-time at 1,170.
4. Last Time They Met
Oklahoma secured its 20th win of the season when it topped TCU, 3-1, on November 21, 2012. The win marked the Sooners’ 16th 20-win season in program history. Morgan Reynolds tallied a match-high 13 kills, while Grace Whitley added 11 and hit a career-best .667. Defensively, McLaurin added eight blocks and Maria Fernanda totaled 19 digs.
5. Tackling the Top 10
In Oklahoma’s sweep over Baylor on October 19, McLaurin moved into the top 10 in kills all-time at Oklahoma. In that match she passed Maraget Page (1983-86) and Trenell Carter (1984-87), who had 1,170 and 1,171, respectively. McLaurin’s 1,182 currently ranks her ninth. She trails Kerri Mulry (1985-88) by 61 for eighth.
6. Sooners Strong in the RPI
At the onset of week seven of the season, the NCAA released its first RPI rankings. Following a 1-0 week, Oklahoma, who started at No. 19, remained at No. 15 as it seeks its fifth consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament. The Sooners have the third highest RPI among Big 12 schools, behind Texas (1) and Kansas (10). Oklahoma is 1-2 against the RPI Top-25, with a win over Arkansas (23), and 5-3 against the Top-50, including wins over BYU (26), Tulsa (36), Kansas State (38) and Iowa State (40).
7. Hitter’s High
Through 20 matches, McLaurin is hitting a career-best .451, besting her .357 attack rate from a year ago. She ranks first in the Big 12 and is five points ahead of Texas freshman Chiaka Ogbogu, who has only played 32 sets compared to McLaurin’s 73. The next closest player in the league with at least 50 sets played is Iowa State’ Tenisha Matlock at .352; 99 points back of McLaurin. She also ranks ninth nationally, trailing Florida’s Chloe Mann for first at an impressive .511.
