IRVING, Texas – University of Oklahoma volleyball seniors Mindy Gowen, Sallie McLaurin and Eden Williams were all honored as First Team Academic All-Big 12 selections as announced by the league office on Tuesday. Junior Kaitlyn Drawe also received recognition as a Second Team selection.
First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better grade-point average while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA. To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team’s scheduled contests.
Gowen, a defensive specialist from Edmond, Okla., is a multidisciplinary studies major, who was a Big 12 All-Academic honoree in both 2011 and 2012. On the court, she has appeared in 39 sets across 14 matches and averaged 1.87 digs per set.
McLaurin is the five-time recipient of the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week this season. A middle blocker from Midwest City, Okla. and health and exercise science major, she leads the team with a 3.69 kills per set average and is first in the league with a .439 hitting percentage. McLaurin was previously named a Big 12 All-Academic selection in 2011 and 2012 as well as earning Capital One Academic All-District recognition earlier this month.
Williams, a defensive specialist from Amarillo, Texas, is majoring in multidisciplinary studies and earned a spot on the Big 12 All-Academic team in both 2011 and 2012. She is third on the team in digs, averaging 2.4 per set.
For Drawe, a defensive specialist and the Sooners’ back-up setter from Lee’s Summit, Mo., this is her first time to make the Big 12 All-Academic team. The multidisciplinary studies major, is averaging 1.79 digs per set and 1.98 assists per set.
