NORMAN, Okla. – After a bizarre weekend with two matches in a 24-four span, Oklahoma returns to action with a road match at Iowa State Saturday afternoon at 5:00 pm.
1. About the Sooners
Oklahoma dropped to 18-6 and 6-4 in the Big 12 after last weekend. Senior middle blocker Sallie McLaurin leads the way for the Sooner attack with 3.73 kills per set and a league-leading .442 hitting percentage. Sophomore setter Julia Doyle has reached the 800-assist mark for the season as she is averaging 9.09 per set. On the defensive side of the ball, sophomore libero Taylor Migliazzo leads the team, and ranks fifth in the league, with 3.85 digs per set. The Sooners have dropped back-to-back losses for the first time this season.
2. Last Time They Met
Oklahoma defeated No. 25 Iowa State, 3-2, to improve to 14-3 on October 5 in Norman. The two teams traded sets with the Sooners coming out on top; 25-20, 17-25, 25-23, 17-25 and 15-12. Rodriguez led all players with 19 kills, while McLaurin hit .406 and totaled 14 kills and four blocks. Hahn picked up 39 digs for the Cyclones, while Jenelle Hudson dished out 55 assists.
3. Bouncing Back
This season, Oklahoma bounced back from its first four losses with 3-1 wins over Portland State, LIU Brooklyn and Kansas State and a 3-2 win over No. 25 Iowa State. OU’s losses to No. 1 Texas and Kansas State on November 2 and 3 marked the first back-to-back losses of the season. The Sooners last lost back-to-back games on November 10 and 14, 2012 with 3-0 defeats to No. 20 Iowa State and No. 22 Kansas. In 2012, the Sooners were 8-2 when returning to the court after a loss, bouncing back in good form, all but twice.
4. All-Time vs. Iowa State
In the last meeting, Oklahoma snapped a four-match losing streak to the Cyclones. The Sooners remain in the lead of the all-time series, 44-28, and are 22-10 in Norman. Oklahoma’s last win prior to October 5 was a 3-1 decision at home on November 13, 2010. The series started in 1976 with a 2-0 Sooner win that started the longest winning streak in series history, six matches.
5. Rodriguez Does it All
An outside hitter by trade, Rodriguez is averaging 2.35 kills per set, good enough for third on the team. She has played in every set this season and has contributed 38 blocks, 26 assists and 19 service aces. Defensively, Rodriguez is second on the team with 3.28 digs per set. She ranks ninth in the Big 12, making her the highest ranked player in the league that it not a libero. Rodriguez also leads the team with eight double-doubles.
6. Academic All-District
McLaurin was voted to the Capital One Academic All-District 7 Volleyball Team as voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). McLaurin, a health and exercise science major with a 3.73 grade-point average, is the 13th Sooner to receive this honor since 2006.
7. RPI Released
At the onset of week seven of the season, the NCAA released its first RPI rankings. Despite an 0-2 week, Oklahoma, who started at No. 19, remained No. 19 as it seeks its fifth consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament. The Sooners, who peaked at No. 15, have the third highest RPI among Big 12 schools, behind Texas (1) and Kansas (17). Oklahoma is 1-3 against the RPI Top-25 with a win over BYU (24) and 5-5 against the Top-50, including wins over Iowa State (33), Arkansas (34), Tulsa (38) and Kansas State (49).
