WACO, Texas – The University of Oklahoma volleyball team made quick work of Baylor in a 3-0 road win on Saturday afternoon. The Sooners improved to 16-4 overall and 4-2 in the Big 12, while the Bears dropped to 9-13 and 1-5.
Oklahoma, which has won nine of its last 10 contests against Baylor, picked up its eighth straight-sets victory of the season, by scores of 25-13, 25-13 and 25-19, and first in conference play.
“We played pretty solid,” said head coach Santiago Restrepo. “We worked a lot this week on blocking and defending. We did, overall, a very good job of that. I think our serving passing did very well today and that was key.”
Senior middle blocker Sallie McLaurin (Midwest City, Okla.) moved into 10th all-time on the career kills list at OU with 1,182 as she knocked down 13 kills, including the score on match-point, to lead the Sooner attack. McLaurin, who notched the 1,000th kill of her career back on September 7, passed Margaret Page (1983-87) with her second kill of the match. She hit .600 on 20 attempts for the match, marking the third time she hit .600 or better on the season and sixth time hitting .500 or better.
“[Sallie] had 13 kills, only one error and hit .600,” expressed Restrepo. “That’s exactly what we want. We’re very excited to have her playing this well in matches on the road.”
Sophomore setter Julia Doyle (Plymouth, Minn.), coming off a career-high 53 assists a week ago, dished out 31 assists and picked up six digs in the win. Defensively, sophomore libero Taylor Migliazzo (Kansas City, Mo.) totaled a team-leading 14 digs.
Sophomore outside hitter Kierra Holst (Coppell, Texas) contributed to the offensive effort with eight kills, while senior Keila Rodriguez (Gurabo, Puerto Rico) and redshirt-freshman Madison Ward each added seven. Rodriguez hit .263 and Ward hit .294.
The Sooners hit .302 for the match and held the Bears to -.010. Baylor’s team leader in kills was Adrien Richburg with five. Setter Amy Rosenbaum collected 17 assists and chipped in with four digs and three kills.
Oklahoma returns to the court at TCU for a 6:30 road match on Wednesday, October 23.
