NORMAN, Okla.—The No. 24 Oklahoma women’s tennis team (7-1) extended their win streak to five with a dominating 6-1 win over No. 30 Purdue (3-3) Saturday in Fayetteville.
"We backed up yesterday's victory with an even better performance today,” OU head coach David Mullins said. “Doubles was much improved and we got off to a great start in singles play. Emma was outstanding this weekend and Ritchie continues to look better with each win."
After a loss Friday, the 31st-ranked senior pair of Mia Lancaster and Whitney Ritchie defeated Mara Schmidt and Krisztina Kapitany 8-6.
Clinching the doubles point for the second day in a row was senior Hermon Brhane and sophomore Zita Engbroks. The duo topped Natalia Davila and Daniela Vidal 8-6 to give the Sooners the 1-0 lead heading into singles. The doubles win marked the eighth straight doubles point for the Sooners.
In singles, the Sooners won five of their six matches. Sophomore Emma Devine defeated Kapitany 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 5 spot to improve to 5-2 on the season.
Junior Abbi Melrose topped Davila 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 6 position to give the Sooners the 3-0 lead. Clinching the match, and improving to 8-0 on the season, was Ritchie with a 6-3, 6-1 victory at the No. 1 spot.
Lancaster and Chumney increased the Sooners score with victories at the No. 3 and 4 positions, respectively.
The Boilermakers lone point came from court two where Brhane fell 3-6, 6-7 to Daniela Vidal.
The Sooners will be back in action Friday Feb. 21 as they take on New Mexico in Albuquerque.
