NORMAN, Okla.--Whitney Ritchie and Mia Lancaster won the 2013 USTA/ITA Central Region Doubles Championship Monday at the Headington Family Tennis Center.

With the win, the OU tandem earned a spot at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships Nov. 7- 10 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York.

Ritchie and Lancaster defeated Arkansas’s Yang Pang and Kimberly-Ann Surin 8-4.

"Mia and Whitney have been the backbone of this team for the last three years," head coach David Mullins said. "I can not think of a more deserving pair to win this title and move on to New York. They both had an outstanding showing in singles and doubles this past week and I am so happy to see them have this kind of success in their senior year."

This win gave Ritchie her second Central Region Doubles Championship. In 2011, Ritchie won with former Sooner Marie-Pier Huet.

After winning the doubles final, Ritchie went on to compete against teammate Hermon Brhane in the singles semifinal. After Ritchie forced a third set, Brhane fought back and won 6-2, 5-7, 6-2.

In the finals, Brhane faced in state rival Oklahoma State’s Kanyapat Narattana. Narattana defeated Brhane 3-6, 6-1, 6-1.

"Hermon did amazing job yesterday and today pushing past an uncomfortable injury in order to make it to the final," Mullins said. "She got outplayed in the final, but is starting to regain her confidence again and is continuing to see improvements."

The Sooners will be back in action Nov. 7 at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships in Flushing, N.Y., and the Northwestern Hidden Duals in Evanston, Ill.
