NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma women’s tennis team will host the five-day ITA Central Regional Championships Oct. 17-21 at the Headington Family Tennis Center. This will be the first year that the regional has been hosted by Oklahoma.

"We are very fortunate that we have such a wonderful facility to host this event,” OU head coach David Mullins said. “There is no doubt that all our best matches were at home last year and this team is extremely comfortable competing in these familiar surroundings."

The tournament begins Thursday and will feature more than 100 athletes from 22 universities including Big 12 rivals Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa State and Oklahoma State. Six ranked players will also be competing including OU senior Hermon Brhane, who is currently ranked 47th in the ITA preseason poll.

Seniors Whitney Ritchie, Mia Lancaster and Brhane are slated for competition in the main draw which begins Friday morning. Freshmen Morgan Chumney and Ann Pepper, sophomores Emma Devine and Zita Engbroks, junior Abbi Melrose and senior Whitney Wofford will begin competition during Thursday’s qualifying draw, which begins at 8 a.m.

Although the Sooners have been competing since September, Mullins indicated this is the most important tournament of the fall season.

"This is really the only tournament of the fall where we are focused more on results than development,” he said. “It is an open draw so it is a great chance for all our players to show that they can compete with highly ranked players from the other top teams in our region."
