NORMAN, Okla. –Two Sooners received All-Big 12 honors and one claimed a postseason award, announced by the conference Wednesday.
Hermon Brhane and Whitney Ritchie were both selected to the All-Big 12 singles and doubles team, this marked Ritchie’s second consecutive season to be named to both squads. Brhane was named the 2013 Newcomer of the Year.
“Whitney and Hermon have established themselves as two of the toughest singles and doubles competitors not only in the Big 12 but nationally too,” OU head coach David Mullins said. “I am happy for them that they are being recognized for their accomplishments this season.”
Brhane led the team in singles with an 11-7 record at the No. 1 position and ended the regular season ranked 59 in singles. Ritchie ended the season with a 9-7 record at the No. 2 spot.
The duo has been ranked nationally this entire season and held a team-best record of 13-5 at the No. 1 doubles position. The pair finished the season with a 6-2 record in the Big 12 and ranked 9th in the ITA Rankings.
The pair was chosen as one of the 32 doubles pairs to compete in the 2013 NCAA Women’s Tennis Championships, May 17-21 at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex in Urbana, Ill.
“Hermon has grown a lot this past season and continues to get better,” Mullins said.
This was Brhane’s first season competing at the Division I level. She transferred from Oklahoma Christian University following the 2011-2012 season.
“We are all excited to see what she can do this post season and on into her senior year now that she has a year of Division I competition under her belt,” Mullins stated.
