NORMAN, Okla. – The No. 34 University of Oklahoma women’s tennis team captured a 4-3 victory against Iowa State Friday, April 5, in Ames, Iowa.

Sophomore Abbi Melrose clinched the match for the Sooners with a 6-0, 6-3 victory at the No. 4 position.

“We played some very good tennis at certain spots today and poorly at others,” OU head coach David Mullins said. “However, we stepped up without Hermon (Brhane) to get to four points and that’s all that matters at this time of year.

The Sooners’ top player, Hermon Brhane, did not play due to injury.

Oklahoma improved to 11-6 overall and 3-2 in Big 12 play after the win.

Oklahoma won the doubles point to take the early 1-0 lead. Whitney Ritchie and Melrose defeated Jenna Langhorst and Ksenia Pronina, 8-1, at the No. 1 position.

Mia Lancaster and Emma Devine clinched the doubles point with an 8-1 victory over Emma Waites and Caroline Hauge on court three.

Freshman Zita Engbroks gave Oklahoma its first singles point of the day with a 6-3, 6-1 win at the No. 6 spot.

Lancaster claimed a victory over Pronina in the No. 2 position.

Oklahoma travels to Morgantown, W. Va, to face West Virginia for the first time in team history Sunday, April 7, at 10 a.m. CT.
